Bangladesh's Buddhist heritage: from Paharpur to Ramu

Pala-era monasteries, ancient Pundranagara, Mainamati, Ramu's lantern festival and Bandarban's Golden Temple — a full pilgrimage without leaving the country.

Bengal was once a great centre of Buddhist learning. Under the Pala kings, from the 8th to the 12th century, vast monasteries rose here and drew monks and scholars from across Asia. Today Barua, Chakma, Marma, Rakhine and other communities keep the tradition alive.

North Bengal: Pala-era monasteries

Cumilla: Mainamati

Shalban Vihara and the surrounding ruins spread over the Lalmai hills. The Mainamati museum's bronze Buddhas and terracotta plaques are worth the stop, and it sits right on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway.
